#VARANASI : Vikas Yatra : APRIL 23, 2019 : PM Narendra Damodardas Modi :

"The glorious, ancient city of Varanasi has taken great strides in development during the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its MP. The massive progress that has happened across sectors is captured here."

========================================================================

 1. #Modern infrastructure for an ancient city :

=======================================================================

========================================================================

Varanasi has been a seat of ancient learning from thousand of years. Being the holiest Hindu city, on the banks of holy Ganga, it attracts many pilgrims from across the country every year. The city is on the bucket list of almost every international tourist who comes to India. They come here to unravel the meaning of life, to seek solace or to study ancient scriptures among other reasons. The city is a budding centre of trade for areas of Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Varanasi needs modern infrastructure, a structural transformation in the infrastructure, which is sustainable in the long run and is in line with its ancient origins.

#In 2014, when PM Modi was elected as the MP of Varanasi, he had remarked :
“There’s a lot of work that god has put me on this earth for. A lot of it is dirty work, but I’m up to the task."

Since then, from world class roads to express trains, from underground cabling to waste treatment plants, from a cultural convention center to modern traffic control, from a multimodal terminal to a container depot for perishables, Varanasi has witnessed landmark revolution in infrastructure in the last five years.

If one looks at the Ghats of Kashi, one can see a phenomenal transformation of Ghats that has ensured there is no littering and garbage. The glittering lighting of Ghats, clean streets and crossings, paintings on the walls and the construction of Kashi Vishwanath Dham have shown that Kashi is progressing, keeping its ancient heritage alive.''
'

A ring road bypassing the city was a demand of the city from the longest time. PM Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the Ring Road and Phase-1 was completed in November 2018. With this development, traffic movement across the city will be much easier, helping decongestion of roads by diverting a lot of heavy vehicular traffic around the city rather than through it.

Varanasi has a very busy airport naturally due to the movement of pilgrims and tourists in and out of the city. A congestion-free road connecting the city with the airport was not only felt as a need but also as a matter of prestige for the city. The 17 plus kilometre long airport road developed under the tenure of PM Narendra Modi, is called the Gateway of Varanasi today. It has ensured an easy way to travel to and from the airport.

As we know, India had never tapped its inland waterways for container movement but this had to change. This milestone was achieved by the Modi government. Varanasi was at the centre of this historic moment for the nation. The development of the first multimodal terminal on an inland waterway in Varanasi was a matter of pride for the city. PM Narendra Modi received the first container vessel on the river ganga in November last year

PM Narendra Modi’s vision is to develop Varanasi as the new centre of cancer treatment, so that patients do not have to go a long distance to other cities for treatment. He laid the foundation of two dedicated cancer hospitals in Varanasi. Also, IMS BHU was accorded AIIMS like status, which will further improve the health facilities in the hospital. This is not only impacts the lives of people in Varanasi, but also the people of the rest of Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Kashi is called the city of Shiva and the development of The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor will be a boon to lakh of devotees of Shiva, who can make use of the direct link being developed between the temple and Ganga Ghat. Apart from the direct link, the temple will have more space to accommodate devotees.

Kashi, a thriving and busy city, generates a lot of waste and sewage. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated a large sewage infrastructure project. A 140 million litre per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant (STP) at Dinapur will make the city get rid of the large waste generated and would further curb river pollution.

The last five years have been momentous in the history of Kashi. Not only has the city given India one of its most popular prime ministers ever, but it has also witnessed the rapid development that a good MP can bring to it. Varanasi as a city has seen large scale transformation in infrastructure and it is clear that PM Narendra Modi had a key role to play in the development of the timeless city.

2. #Preserving cultural heritage of Kashi :

=======================================================================

========================================================================

#Kashi is the heart of the Indian civilization.

#The heritage of the marvellous city is regarded as old as time itself and as American author Twain puts it the city is “older than history”.

Hailed as the city of Lord Shiva, who is affectionately called Bhole Baba, the city is famous for the Kashi Vishwanath temple, home of the most revered jyotirlinga, located in the bustling street of old Banaras. The temple attracts millions of pilgrims every year from across the country. The shrine is located in the congested lanes of old Kashi, with no direct link to Ganga river. Apart from the absence of the link, it is surrounded by hundreds of old houses which makes the temple hidden between the concrete structures

PM Modi laid the foundation stone of Kashi Vishwanath Dham project in March this year, which includes removal of the buildings surrounding the Kashi Vishwanath temple and providing direct connectivity between the shrine and the Ganga river. Starting of the project was a dream come true for PM Modi who thought about a similar kind of project in Kashi even before joining the arena of active politics.

#After winning elections from Kashi in 2014 he had remarked –
#“I have not come here (Kashi) but I was called”

#While laying the foundation of Kashi Vishwanath Dham in March this year, PM Modi remarked –

" When I came for elections in 2014, I had said that I haven't come but have been called here. Today, I think that was an invitation for such work only and now that resolve has further strengthened.

Vishwanath Dham is a project that I have been thinking about for a long time. I have come to Kashi even before I was in active politics. Since then I would think that one must do something for the Temple Complex. With the blessings of Bhole Baba, my dream has come true”

The demolition of buildings around the temple, for the Kashi Vishwanath corridor project had started last year (2018), and the demolition led to the recovery of at least 40 very ancient temples. All those ancient temples were buried under other construction around them and people had built kitchens, bathrooms and much more atop those temples.

Centuries old ancient temples, earlier hidden are now visible, they will be preserved and will be opened to public.

Another area of concern was a direct link between Kashi Vishwanath Temple (KVT) and Ganga river. Now with a direct link between the temple and the Ganga river, one can reach the temple premises within minutes, without going around in the lanes.

The completion of project will give Kashi Vishwanath Temple complex a brand-new look and more space. Once situated in the congested space among the surrounding buildings, the temple complex will now have its area of own. A devout Shiva bhakt who takes a dip in the holy river every morning and pays his tribute to Lord Shiva in the temple can now see the temple from the Ghats. It means a lot to a Kashiwasi, who earlier had to go through many lanes to reach temple, after taking a dip in the holy Ganga.

Apart from Kashi Vishwanath Dham, other culturally significant areas are being developed too. Under HRIDAY yojana, life stories of stalwarts from Kashi such as Kabir, Tulsidas, Ravidas, Munshi Premchand, Bhartendu Harishchandra and Jaishankar Prasad were brought to life through mural paintings. Wall paintings of Kabir Chaura crossing, which was named after Saint Kabir are a tribute to the life of the great Bhakti saint who lived in Varanasi. Murals of Assi ghat, one of the most iconic Ghats of Varanasi, tell stories about the refined culture of Varanasi.

The famous townhall building of Maidagin, where Mahatma Gandhi started the freedom movement in Varanasi is refurbished and looks like a newly built structure. Manikarnika Ghat, which is the famed gateway to ‘Moksha’ in Kashi, is cleaner now. Also, more facilities are brought in apart from the beautification from Moksh Dwar to Lagayat ghat on Manikarnika ghat.

Preserving the intrinsic cultural heritage of Varanasi has been given the foremost importance under PM Modi, be it in form of beautification drives, development of murals, expansion of facilities, cleanliness drives or refurbishment of iconic structures.

3. #Giving wings to the skills of weavers and artisans of Kashi :

=======================================================================

========================================================================

PM Modi laid the foundation stone of trade facilitation centre and Crafts Museum in 2017, for the
benefit of many weavers, craftsmen and artisans of Varanasi and near by areas.

He had once remarked that India cannot become Vishwa Guru without the development of Kashi. Development of Kashi is incomplete without bettering the lives of weavers.

Deendayal Hastkala Sankul a trade facilitation centre for handicrafts inaugurated by PM Modi, helps artisans and weavers gain an international exposure. The centre will encourage weavers and artisans of Varanasi and nearby areas to promote handicrafts in both domestic and international markets.

The crafts museum will further preserve the traditional products of Varanasi. Overall, the centre will increase the incomes of many weavers and artisans across the city.

Handicrafts of Kashi are spread in the form of cottage industries, Banarasi silk saree, textile industry, carpet industries are some of the prominent ones. Any threat to these traditional industries would be an assault on the means of livelihood for many weavers. More than lakhs of handloom weavers are directly or indirectly related with these indsutries. Measures taken for the betterment of weavers and artisans would go a long way in enhancing their incomes.

There are some initiaitves which are specially taken to enhance the standard of living of the artisans, craftsmen and weavers. From a world class laboratory in IICT Bhadohi to minimise the defects in the carpet products, to a Pehchan ID Card for weavers to cut out middlemen. For the retention of next generation of weavers, a carpet engineering program is being run in IICT Bhadohi. 75 percent of the fees of the students belonging to poor families of weavers is being taken care of by the government.

There is a provision for Margin Money of Rs. 10,000 in MUDRA scheme for weavers. Under mega carpet clusters in Mirzapur and Bhadohi. weavers are being given modern looms. Also, they are being imparted skills under skill development programs

At carpet expo, PM Modi said –

“Friends, whenever I used to talk to weaver brothers and sisters before, one thing would surely have been heard, they used to say that our children do not want to join this work anymore. What could be a more serious situation than this? Today, when we are leading the world in terms of carpet, then it is equally necessary to inspire and encourage future generations.”

To realise this goal, a B.Tech. program in the carpet technology is being run in IICT Bhadoi. There are plans to run such programs in training institutes in other parts of the country as well. India currently occupies 35 per cent share of the world's carpet market. PM Modi has set a target to own 50% of the world's carpet market.

Across India, after PM Modi took up the cause of promoting Khadi, the sales of Khadi have been on an upswing. In Varanasi too, Khadi insititutions and workers are being encouraged, with credit link and capital subsidy. Under Kasuhal Vikas Yojana , thousands of youth are being skilled and empowered. The Coir Board also organised an international vyapar mela.

As can be seen, PM Modi has set a holistic vision for the weavers and artisans of Kashi. Not only are they being trained under different skill develoment programs, their financial capital need is also being taken care of with MUDRA loans. Younger generation of weavers are being given education to retain them in the valuable profession.

4. #When PM is your MP :

========================================================================

========================================================================

#"Varanasi is spiritual. Varanasi is mystical. Varanasi is sacred. Varanasi represents the timeless values of Indian civilisation. The city has been carrying forward the ancient and rich legacy of traditions dating back to thousands of years."

#What is so new about this oldest city!

For the first time a Member of Parliament from the city is the Prime Minister of India. If we look at the political history in India, a PM’s constituency is in the spotlight only for a brief period of time, that is when the PM is contesting and is largely forgotten till the next phase of elections.

But Varanasi, being PM Modi’s constituency has been the centre of attention for the whole country throughout the last five years. In last five years, despite from his jam-packed schedule PM has been visiting his constituency, multiple times in a year. PM Modi has a deep affection for the city and its people.

#In his own words to the people of Kashi –
“Kashi owns me, I am imprisoned in your love”

In his many visits, apart from his interactive sessions with the people of Varanasi, PM Modi is seen inaugurating a hospital, or flagging off an express train, laying the foundation stone for a ring road or making Kashi the first multi modal hub on an inland water way.

Another aspect of this development process in last five years and the difference it has brought, can be seen in the completion of projects in a time bound manner. PM Modi laid the foundation stone of Deen Dayal Hastkala Sankul – a trade facilitation centre for weavers, craftsmen and artisans of Varanasi in 2014 and in 2017, he dedicated the centre to the nation.

In 2015, he laid the foundation stone of Ring Road Phase 1 and the airport road and within a span of three years he dedicated the two most crucial infrastructure projects to the city. In 2014, PM Modi talked about cleaning up the city of Varanasi and especially its ghats. Today, one can see that change in the clean ghats of Varanasi.

#PM Modi as an MP had interacted with the people of Varanasi on his 68th birthday celebrations and presented a report card, he said –

“You may have given me responsibility of Prime Minister but it is my duty to give you an account of my work as your member of parliament. You are my high command, you are my master and I am your ‘sevak’ (servant). So, I have to give you the account of every paisa and time spent on Varanasi.”

#No Prime Minister of India may have done this in the past to the people of his constituency.

#Not only is Kashi witnessing development on a large scale but people of city are also experiencing what it is like if their MP is the PM.

A cheque bounce law was scrapped, on the request of small business men from Varanasi, who went to PM Modi with their grievance. The law allowed filing a case in a court only in the state where the bank on which the cheque was drawn, is located. This created a lot of inconvenience to traders, especially small businessmen. Within a month, a new executive order was passed and it reversed the earlier position. Not only Kashi, but small business men from the whole country will benefit from the new order.

The Jan Sampark office of PM Modi in Kashi is dedicated for the service of common people in the city. When floods had hit the city, the workers of PM Modi’s Jan Sampark office worked round the clock to help the city.

When the PM is your MP, and when the PM happens to be someone who’s transforming the face of the country itself, the constituency will clearly see fast-paced, unprecedented and impactful progress.

#Actions & Hope :

#Caring for children of support staff :

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#Donating Rs. 21 lakh from personal savings to educate daughters of drivers and peons working with Gujarat Government

#Once again showing his commitment to girl child education, Narendra Modi donated Rs. 21 lakhs from his personal savings towards upbringing and welfare of the daughters of drivers and peons working with the Gujarat government. He donated the amount before leaving for Delhi.

#On one hand this step indicated Narendra Modi’s unwavering passion towards girl child education. As Chief Minister, he would actively take part in the Kanya Kelavani Abhiyan, in which the entire Government machinery including the CM, IAS and IPS officials would go to the villages and cities of Gujarat and ask parents to send their daughters to school.

#On the other hand, it also demonstrates his gratitude towards all those who worked with him, especially the support staff.

The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty starts with the Mughal man named Ghiyasuddin Ghazi. He was the City Kotwal i.e. police officer of Delhi prior to the uprising of 1857, under the Mughal rule. After capturing Delhi in 1857, in the year of the mutiny, the British were slaughtering all Mughals everywhere. The British made a thorough search and killed every Mughal so that there were no future claimant to the throne of Delhi. The Hindus on the other hand were not targeted by the British unless isolated Hindus were found to be siding with the Mughals, due to past associations. Therefore, it became customary for many Mohammedans to adopt Hindu names. So, the man Ghiyasuddin Ghazi (the word means kafir-killer) adopted- a Hindu name Gangadhar Nehru and thus saved his life by the subterfuge. Ghiyasuddin Ghazi apparently used to reside on the bank of a canal (or Nehr) near the Red Fort. Thus, he adopted the name ‘Nehru’ as the family name. Through out the world, we do not find any descendant other than that of Gangadhar, having the surname Nehru. The 13th volume of the “Encyclopedia of Indian War of Independence” (ISBN:81-261-3745-9) by M.K. Singh states it elaborately. The Government of India have been hiding this fact.
