--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------For a considerable part of all our lives, we had at one time, or the other complained of the menace of our ministers or even mere government officials taking advantage of their positions. We have at one time, or the other made to wait just because a so-called VIP was cutting through the queue. People are the king, mostly in the paper never in theory. But the last five years under the NDA govt, a lot has changed. Ministers have genuinely become servants to the people. Narendra Modi has been careful enough in choosing the best among the masses to carry out the needful. One prominent person among them all is Piyush Goyal, the honorable minister for railways.
He is not your ordinary VVIP racist minister. Despite having a lot of luxury at his disposal, holding degrees and ranks from of the best universities in the world, a Chartered accountant by profession, Goyal has always been a man of sheer hard work and moreover a grounded minister. Through this article, IRC would like to look into the public life of Goyal and how he is helping in removing the stigma around VVIPs and people.
1. TRAVEL WITH THE PEOPLE :
We as a nation have always been accustomed to see ministers travel in business or first class aircraft or even chartered copters. It is to this arena that Goyal walks in and shatters all our imaginations. Over the years there have been multiple social media posts all across the country of spotting Piyush Goyal traveling just like any other person in public transport.
In a surprise move, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has been seen traveling in the Kota Janshatabdi Express and taking the feedback of passengers. Goyal inspected the whole train when it departed from Mathura.
Piyush Goyal took over the Railways ministry from Suresh Prabhu earlier this year, based on his performance in the power ministry, where he turned out to be a strict taskmaster.
As per accounts by some passengers, he also traveled in the general class from Mysuru to Bengaluru, along with the other passengers and interacted with them regarding the condition of the services provided inside the trains.
Goyal had visited Mysuru along with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate a new express train at Mysuru Railway station.
2.WORK WITH TRAVEL :
Another important feature of all his travels in buses and airplanes has been not only that he travels with the people but also works even during the journey. Multiple accounts of people and photographs taken by them have shown that he has never been found wasting time. He is either taking feedback from the people or doing some paperwork or other works even a late night in air travels.
Once again proving the point of service before self. Goyal is known as a strict minister to his subordinates, who always insists on completing the work before anything. He is the kind of politician and leader the country needs for the road ahead of a new India.
3. WORKING LATE NIGHT :
Just as said before, day or night work is what is essential for him. He epitomizes the idea of 'each file affects each life.' Another feature of his work has been that lots of work and meetings happen during the night. You may have a look upon these below instances.
4. PIYUSH GOYAL – MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS :
Bullet Train – Though the first MoU between India and Japan for Shinkansen popularly known as Bullet Train was signed in 2007 during UPA 1 government, things didn't move an inch ahead till Narendra Modi took charge as Prime Minister. UPA government had finalized the route Mumbai – Ahmedabad for the first Bullet Train after a joint survey by Indian Railways and Shinkansen of Japan. Things moved fast, as NDA governments which are known for its infrastructure spending, fast-tracked the bullet train. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe jointly laid the foundation stone of India's first Bullet Train in September 2017 between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Work has already started on the route, and Prime Minister Modi has given a target of August 2022 for its completion and first commercial run. Looking at the penchant of Modi government to complete projects on time, India would surely have its first Bullet Train on tracks by August 2022.
Train 18 – Train 18 which has now been renamed as Vande Bharat Express, is the first modern world class rolling stock produced indigenously under 'Make in India' initiative by Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai at the cost of just Rs 100 crore. World over one rake of such train equipped with all modern amenities and features costs at least Rs 250 crore. Train 18 has been wholly conceptualized and designed in India itself. It is designed to reach a top speed of 200 KMPH, conditions permitting making it fastest train in India.
Trains like Gatiman Express, Tejas Express, Mahamana Express, Humsafar Express launched – All the trains come with modern coaches and are equipped with better and advanced features for the comfort of the passengers. Gatiman Train was the fastest train in India before Vande Bharat train (Train 18) started operations.
Anubhuti Coaches and Deen Dayalu Coaches –Railways have also started manufacturing Anubhuti coaches for the comfort of 1AC and Executive class passengers in Rajdhani Express. These coaches are modern and upgraded version of coaches for already premium class coaches like 1AC and Executive Class. These include airplane like features like LED lighting, bio vacuum toilets, reading lights, attendant call button, etc. Famous author Chetan Bhagat was so impressed with Anubhuti Coaches that he urged travelers to chuck flights and travel in Anubhuti Coaches. However, railways are not only about premium travelers.
Common public also travels through railways as it is the only affordable and viable option to travel long distance for them. For the benefit of general bogie travelers, railways launched Deen Dayalu Coaches. All seats in Deen Dayalu coaches are cushioned, unlike regular second class non-reserved compartments. It also has Aquaguard fitted in each coach to provide potable drinking water to the passengers. It boasts of LED lights and more numbers of mobile charging sockets. 1000 such Deen Dayalu coaches have been manufactured.
Elimination of all unmanned railway level crossings – Indian Railways has eliminated all unmanned railway level crossings (UMRL) on its network on mission mode either by manning them or constructing over bridges, underpasses or diversions. UMRLs were the primary cause of train accidents in the country as it provided unauthorized access to people on railway tracks. To get an idea about the speed at which they were eliminated, in April 2017, there were 4,943 UMRLs across the IR network, in April 2018, the number fell to 3,479 UMRLs, by November 2018, only 77 UMRLs were left and by December 2018 only 1 UMRL was left which was closed 1st February 2019, one year ahead of the target, making India completely UMRL free and eliminating a major reason of train
accidents.
Best safety record in the history of Indian Railways – IR recorded its best-ever safety record in 2017-18 with the number of accidents at 73, which were recorded in double digits for the first time in the history of railways.
Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh (RRSK) fund of Rs 1 lakh crore introduced in 2017-18 to be spent exclusively on safety over five years (2017-18 to 2021-22). For the first time, railways have seen such a colossal allocation on safety.
Yes, Piyush Goyal is the minister that we all need. His efficiency and work capacity can be quantified just by looking at the transformation Indian Railways has had over these years. Under him, the railways and the power sector have had historical milestones. Team Modi, unlike all other Govts we have had is putting out a statement, it is merely the reason why they found the way to the hearts of the people.

Last week, 24 rail passengers were hospitalised due to food poisoning after they had breakfast on-board the Tejas Express, a premium train that runs between Goa and Mumbai.
What was shocking here is that the incident came merely three months after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had said in its report that the Indian Railways is serving food on trains and stations which is unfit for human consumption.
The CAG has pointed out several loopholes in the managing of catering services. It had pulled up the Railways for mismanagement of catering services, poor quality food, and monopolisation - which has led to a compromise in quality.
