Ref : 1.  Anna University to Teach Upanishads and Gita to Engineering Students :  26 Sep 2019 : Neelambaran A : NEWSCLICK

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Several political parties, academicians and students’ organisations have condemned the move by the university.

The Anna University has included ‘philosophy’ as a subject for the undergraduate engineering students in its new regulation from the academic year 2019-20. The topics in the subject include Hindu scriptures like Upanishadas, Bhagavad Gita and Vedas. Another optional subject—personality development through life enlightenment skills—has completely incorporated Gita in the syllabus. The bachelor degree students of information technology course will be studying the subject in their third semester from the next academic year.

Several political parties, academicians and students’ organisations have condemned the move by the university, saying that it goes against the secular principles.

1. TEACHERS, STUDENTS, WRITERS’ FORUM OPPOSE MOVE :

Anna University is the premier technical university in the state and the announcement of the new regulation has attracted widespread condemnation from across the sections of the society. A joint statement by the All India Federation of University and College Teachers Federation (AIFUCTO), Tamil Nadu Science Forum (TNSF), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ and Artists’ Association (TNPWAA) said that they stand against the introduction of such a subject in engineering courses.

The statement said, “It is unfair to include a religious book followed by one particular religion in a university syllabus. This will offend the beliefs of the followers of other religions. Such religious books can be taught in theosophical colleges, but not in a university or college, which is against the secular principles framed by the Indian constitution.”

2. WILL FURTHER REDUCE INTAKE? :

The demand for engineering studies has been on a continuous decline in the past few years in Tamil Nadu. The self-financing colleges are having tough time attracting students due to the lack of prospects of employment and a number of colleges have withdrawn several courses. “The inclusion of Bhagavad Gita in the engineering curriculum would further alienate the students from pursuing engineering courses and hence, all such subjects should be immediately withdrawn by the university,” the statement added.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), in a Facebook statement published by its president M K Stalin, called for the withdrawal of the subject and demanded that the process of imposing religious beliefs on other students be stopped.

The Tamil Nadu state committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said in a statement, “The state has witnessed strong protests against the draft National Education Policy (NEP), but the state government has shown high inclination towards implementing it even before the act is being implemented by the union government. The present move of the Anna University is in tune with the recommendations in the NEP which is against the secular principles. The university has acted as per the instructions of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) on the inclusion of subjects. The university must withdraw the inclusion from the curriculum at the earliest.”

3. UPANISHADS AND GITA WITH SCIENCE :

The subject philosophy—that the university is introducing—has mixed science and mythology much to the dismay of the students and the academicians. It carries a credit score of three, with three contact classes per week. The topics in the five chapters of the subject include Knowledge (Vidya) Versus Ignorance (Avidya), Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, ‘Nasidiya Sukta’ in Relation With Big Bang Theory, Space as the Final Goal, Udgitha, Body And Speech, Siksha Valli, Taittriya Upanishad, Krishna’s Advice to Arjuna on How to Conquer Mind, Rtam (Truth) and Satyam (Eternal Truth), the Different Chakras and the Stages of Sublimation and Philosophy of Yoga and Siva for Union of Mind and Body.

The list of optional subjects include: Sanskrit for technical knowledge, stress management by yoga, unnat bharat abhiyan and personality development through life enlightenment skills along with Indian Constitution, pedagogy studies and value education. The five chapters under the subject ‘personality development through life enlightenment skills’ are titled neetisatakam-holistic development of personality, approach to day to day work and duties based on Shrimad Bhagawad Gita, personality of role model – Shrimad Bhagwad Gita.

4. EXCLUSION AND SAFFRONISATION :

The state government led by AIADMK has been very fast when it comes to implementing the schemes proposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government. The recent announcement of public examination for the students of third, fifth and eighth classes was seen a step towards implementation of NEP, but the government announced an exemption for three years from the exam after severe outcry.

The topics included under the subject philosophy do not have any relevance to the degree the student has chosen; nor does it play any role in the career development of the student. The agenda of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of saffronisation of education—along with the proposed NEP—strongly advocates privatisation, centralisation and corporatisation of education. Such policies will result in the exclusion of the socially and economically backward communities.

The DMK and the Left on Wednesday opposed a proposal by premier technical varsity, the state-run Anna University, to include philosophy in its syllabus for the engineering students

The DMK and the Left on Wednesday opposed a proposal by premier technical varsity, the state-run Anna University, to include philosophy in its syllabus for the engineering students, with M K Stalin saying it amounted to "imposition" of Sanskrit.

The varsity, for its part, said no course was compulsory and denied any attempt to "impose" Sanskrit. The courses were meant for undergraduate engineering students and they were free to pick a course of their choice, Anna University Vice-Chancellor MK Surappa said.

Earlier, a section of the media had reported that Anna University intended to include philosophy and Bhagavad Gita in its syllabus at the College of Engineering Guindy and other campuses for the engineering students. Opposing the reported move, DMK president M K Stalin sought the intervention of Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who is the varsity's Chancellor.

"It is condemnable to attempt imposition of Sanskrit by making philosophy compulsory in the syllabus of Anna University's CEG campus," Stalin said in a tweet.

The Leader of Opposition in the state assembly sought the intervention of the governor and the Higher Education Department to revise the syllabus.

The CPI (M) state unit also flayed the reported move. CPI (M) state unit secretary K Balakrishnan said it was strongly condemnable that philosophy and Bhagavad Gita had been included in the engineering syllabus.

"This is against the principles of secularism. Introducing the teachings of a particular religion in a syllabus studied by students from all faiths and the state government standing by that is not acceptable," he said in a statement and demanded its withdrawal.

Denying any attempts of imposition of Sanskrit, Surappa insisted that the students were free to choose from any of the 12 courses offered as part of efforts to make them "well-rounded."

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) had recommended over 20 courses including Sanskrit but the varsity had chosen only 12, and had not even opted for the language, he said.

"To make the students well-rounded apart from technology, we are introducing more and more courses in humanities," he told reporters.

Only the Information Science and Technology department was offering the course, and it was up to the student concerned to opt for it or not, he added.

"If some student doesn't like this course, he always has an option to choose any other course... so no course is compulsory, nobody is controlling anyone here," he said.

"We are not imposing anything, in fact we are not teaching Sanskrit at all," he added.

NOTE :
What is Sanatana Dharma? Sadhguru talks about this “eternal law” and explains the different classifications of scriptural texts of shruti and smriti in Hindu culture.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sanatana Dharma is the dimension of life which does not change, which is the basis of our existence. Whether it is a worm, an insect, a bird, an animal, or a plant, all of them are ruled by Sanatana Dharma, the fundamental laws that govern existence. This is not a penal code imposed by human beings upon each other, for control and some semblance of sanity in society. Transactional laws have to change from generation to generation. That is a different matter. Sanatana Dharma is not a transactional dharma – it is an existential dharma.

"Wherever you are, whether you are Indian, Hindu, non-Hindu, whatever you are, Sanatana Dharma applies to everyone."

Let us understand the word “dharma.” Dharma means “the law.” Dharma does not mean religion. In this culture, we do not know what religion is. We are only looking at what the underlying laws are for your life to happen in the best possible way. We understand unless you stick to these laws, your life cannot happen well. These laws are not an imposition but the foundation of existence. If you know the laws, and you are in tune with them, then your life happens effortlessly. If you do not know, you will simply suffer for no reason.

Does Sanatana Dharma belong to a Hindu or an Indian person or some other person? –That is not the point. Wherever you are, whether you are Indian, Hindu, non-Hindu, whatever you are, Sanatana Dharma applies to everyone, because these are the laws which guide the fundamental process of life. No other culture has looked at it with such profoundness. Because of that pride, we may say, “This is Hindu Sanatana Dharma.” But we are limiting the possibility of Sanatana Dharma by adding the word “Hindu” to it. Hindu is a geographical identity. The land that lies between the Himalayas and Indu Sagara is Hindu. Sanatana Dharma applies to every life. It talks about how to handle the unborn, the born, the grown-up, the dead, different stages of life, and all dimensions of life. This is a very profound way of seeing life.
------------------------------------------

"Smriti and Shruti"

----------------------------------------
If you had come here a hundred years ago, you would be dressed differently, and you would be doing something else. If you had come a thousand years ago, again you would be doing something different – maybe you would be a farmer or a fisherman.

What we are doing, how we are dressed, how we speak and how we act is of the times; it keeps changing. How the next generation will act, how they will dress and what they will do, will be totally different from the way we do it right now. This is one dimension of life – we call it smritii. Smriti literally translates as “from memory.” What you have learnt by memory is smriti.

Either we are doing the same thing that our parents and our culture did, or, in reaction, we are doing the opposite thing. But this is a constantly changing process. Not only from generation to generation, in our own life, every few years, our smritis are changing. From our memory, we are changing many aspects of our life.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Smriti is something that every generation should reinvent or amend"

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Smriti is something that every generation should reinvent or amend. Evolution does not necessarily mean doing something better than the previous generation. It is just that because situations are changing, we are evolving to fit into those situations. Situational transactions always have to change and evolve. We can debate and say that how people ate a hundred years ago is not the way we want to eat today, because our work habits have changed. When you were plowing the land, what you ate and how much was different. How you do things must be constantly amended. Even in the constitution, there are fundamental rights that are absolutely sacrosanct – you cannot touch them. Everything else is available for amendments, improvements, and knockdown.

Your smriti and my smriti may be different. But there is something else called as shruti. This can be interpreted in many different ways; one dimension of it is, it is the tune of life. The tune is not set by you – it is creation.

Only if you understand the shruti of life, can you find the rhythm. This is what Bharata means. Bha means bhava or the experience of life. Ra means raga, which is the shruti of life. Ta means tala (the rhythm). Bhava is what happens to you – it is an experience. But the raga or the shruti is already set. Now it is for you to find the right rhythm for it, so that life happens beautifully, like a wonderful music. If you do not find the rhythm, the same shruti that facilitates life will crush you.

Shruti does not change, because it is not set by you – it is set by creation. So Sanatana Dharma means to understand what governs your life so that you live a profound and beautiful life.
------------------------------------------------------------

"Being in Tune with the Laws"

------------------------------------------------------------
In this culture, no one is talking about morality, commandments, what you should do, what you should not do, “If you do this, you will go to heaven. If you do that, you will go to hell.” All this is not there because we inculcated this dimension: If you are in tune with the laws, you do not need punishment, you do not need reward. It is just like if you understand the traffic rules and you are driving accordingly, you do not need a policeman.

Right now they say there are over 1 trillion life forms on this planet, but I think there are many more that you have not even seen. From a micro-organism to a human being and everything in between, they all have come from the same soil. From the same soil, a tree or a creeper are growing. From the same soil, you have eaten, and you have this kind of body. From the same soil, I have eaten, and I have that kind of body.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Sanatana Dharma does not belong to you or me – it is laid down by creation."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You cannot become a tree, a dog, a cat, a cow, an elephant, or a tiger – do what you want. The source is the same, but look at the manifold expression.  So obviously, there is a law governing it, no matter what. It is fixed like a railway track, and you are going on it. The only question is, how fast and how far will you go? How profoundly do we perceive the law, and how much are we in tune with it?

Essentially, the entire system of yoga is about being in tune with the rest of existence, so that your life happens joyfully, exuberantly, to its fullest capacity. The only thing that can go wrong with your life is this: do you find full expression to your life or not? What can go wrong with a tree? The only question is, will it grow into its full capacity, or will it die as a half-grown tree? The same is true with the human being. If you are in tune with the laws, you will grow to your full possibility. If you are not, you will become stunted in some way. Fundamentally, this is our only concern, even if people are not aware of it. All their desires, ambitions, and longings are about becoming a full-fledged life. If you want to become a full-fledged life, understanding the laws on whose basis this life is happening, is very important.

The Sanatana Dharma does not belong to you or me – it is laid down by creation. It is for you and me to be in tune with it. Here in India, we understood and codified it, and put it together in a certain way. This does not mean that in the rest of the world, no one knows about it. Many individual people know about it. They may not have written it down as shruti and smriti. But a whole lot of human beings around the world have been in tune with it, because everywhere, human beings have blossomed and lived well.

The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty starts with the Mughal man named Ghiyasuddin Ghazi. He was the City Kotwal i.e. police officer of Delhi prior to the uprising of 1857, under the Mughal rule. After capturing Delhi in 1857, in the year of the mutiny, the British were slaughtering all Mughals everywhere. The British made a thorough search and killed every Mughal so that there were no future claimant to the throne of Delhi. The Hindus on the other hand were not targeted by the British unless isolated Hindus were found to be siding with the Mughals, due to past associations. Therefore, it became customary for many Mohammedans to adopt Hindu names. So, the man Ghiyasuddin Ghazi (the word means kafir-killer) adopted- a Hindu name Gangadhar Nehru and thus saved his life by the subterfuge. Ghiyasuddin Ghazi apparently used to reside on the bank of a canal (or Nehr) near the Red Fort. Thus, he adopted the name ‘Nehru’ as the family name. Through out the world, we do not find any descendant other than that of Gangadhar, having the surname Nehru. The 13th volume of the “Encyclopedia of Indian War of Independence” (ISBN:81-261-3745-9) by M.K. Singh states it elaborately. The Government of India have been hiding this fact.
