New Delhi/Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], May 16 (ANI): A day after Tamil superstar Rajinikanth said that he might entertain the possibility of joining politics, parties have welcomed his statement saying it would change the equation of the state.

Welcoming the same, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday said if Rajinikanth entered politics, a credible alternative would emerge in the coming days.

BJP leader S. Prakash said that many personalities from the tinsel town have ruled the state and the the kind of popularity Rajinikanth enjoys, his entry would change the equation in the state.

“Hitherto, he was consistently refusing to accept the fact that he will be entering the politics. It is for the first time he has accepted this. Rajinikanth is a towering personality in Tamil Nadu. With the kind of popularity Rajinikanth is enjoying in Tamil Nadu, his entry into politics will change the equation in the state. A credible alternative will emerge in the coming days,” Prakash told ANI.

Even the Congress opined the same and said he would bring good to the state.

“God is willing and we want to see Rajinikanth in politics. It’s been the wish of people from Tamil Nadu for quite some time. God willing and God blessing, we will see him serve the people of Tamil Nadu. He’ll do good to the people of Tamil Nadu,” Congress leader Tom Vadakkan told ANI.

Claiming it to be a ‘political accident’, Rajinikanth who held a ‘darbar’ with his fans after a massive gap of eight years, admitted yesterday that he committed a mistake by supporting a political alliance 21 years ago.

Continuing to maintain his intriguing stand over joining politics, Rajinikanth further asserted that some people used his name for ‘political gains’.

Addressing his fans in Chennai, the superstar said, “Some of my fans urged me to join politics and it’s not bad even to enter politics, but making money out of this is bad.”

However, the star added, “If in case I decide to join politics, then those making money will not be entertained.”

“God made me an actor and I promise Rajini will never ever disappoint his fans in acting,” he added.

The former prime minister's grandson, now with BJP says, the superstar met his grandfather twice in the run-up to the 1996 elections and said he would campaign for the Congress if it went alone

Disputing popular accounts of many Congressmen from Tamil Nadu that P.V. Narasimha Rao’s indifference blocked the entry of superstar Rajinikanth into politics, his grandson N.V. Subash said the former Prime Minister was keen on the Congress contesting the 1996 Assembly polls with the actor as its face.

Mr. Subash, now with the BJP, said Mr. Rajinikanth met his grandfather twice in the run-up to the 1996 elections. The actor said he would campaign for the Congress if it went alone. “At the second meeting, he said he would campaign through television for the party. Even at this point, Mr. Rao was recepti-ve to the idea,” said Mr. Subash.

But Mr. Rajinikanth’s abrupt departure to the United States, when the talks on his support to the Congress were under way, forced Rao to doubt whether the actor’s seriousness, he recalled.

“I am pointing to this instance to show how my grandfather’s legacy has been systematically tarnished by some Congress leaders through false stories,” said Mr. Subash, the son of Rao’s eldest daughter.

In fact, in 1996, after the Congress decided to stick to the AIADMK, Rao’s posters were torn up in Tamil Nadu. The Congress then split, with the late G.K. Moopanar floating the Tamil Manila Congress and aligning with the DMK, helping it capture power.

Mr. Subash said that despite being the tallest leader of the Congress from Telangana, Rao was ignored by the party at the instance of the Gandhis. On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged Rao’s contribution during his Lok Sabha election campaign. <

In 2002, Mr. Rajnikanth unveiled plans to start a "people's movement'' on the Cauvery issue and highlight the need for interlinking Himalayan and peninsular rivers. He denied having any desire to see himself as a "political leader or statesman”.

CHENNAI OCT. 30. While denying that he had any desire to see himself as a "political leader or statesman,'' the film star, Rajnikant, today unveiled plans to start a "people's movement'' on the Cauvery issue and highlight the need for interlinking Himalayan and peninsular rivers.

Making it clear that he did not want any "publicity or political mileage'' from the Cauvery issue, Mr. Rajnikant, at the same time, expressed his intention of meeting the President, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, the Congress leader, Sonia Gandhi, and the Chief Ministers of the four southern States, including Tamil Nadu's Jayalalithaa, to build up political support for interlinking of rivers.

Claiming that he had received a "tremendous response'' to his fast on the Cauvery issue and his offer of Rs. 1 crore towards the interlinking project, Mr. Rajnikant, in an interview to The Hindu, said he wanted to create an awareness among the people of the issue.

Politicians were not interested in thinking beyond an election. They did not have a vision for even five years — just for "three or four years'' — he said. Thus, there was need for persons like him stepping in: Persons who did not have a political plank and who could talk to leaders of different political parties.

Interlinking of rivers would not take more than 11 or 12 years. The project could be completed at a cost of Rs.75,000 crores, at the most at Rs. 1 lakh crores. Noting that interlinking would be beneficial to all the States, he wondered why it had not been taken up so far. "Money is not a problem,'' he said. "Don't give it as an excuse.'' After his announcement offering Rs. 1 crore for the project, a small-scale industrialist sent in a cheque for Rs. 10 lakhs for the cause, recalled Mr. Rajnikant.

And, he saw a role for himself in getting the project in the start-up mode. But, in his trademark humility, the film star added: "Only God can do things. But I can initiate awareness.'' Whatever his differences of opinion with Ms. Jayalalithaa, he did not envisage any difficulty in getting her to accept the project. "She is facing problems now. But it is in the interest of everybody. She will be for it.''

Mr. Rajnikant said he was already in touch with the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh Chief Ministers, S. M. Krishna and Chandrababu Naidu. He would also involve the former Prime Ministers, Deve Gowda and P. V. Narasimha Rao. "One who rules the waters, rules the world,'' the actor said, explaining his optimism that it would be possible to get the project going with the backing of politicians. The States which benefited from the project could share the cost. It could also generate employment for thousands of people.

Showing his impatience with those offering excuses for not going ahead with the project, Mr. Rajnikant said: "Do it. We have to act.'' As a first step, he would plead for formation of a statutory `Peninsular River Development Authority,' by an Act of Parliament. Direct linking of the Ganga and the Cauvery was not possible, but once the southern rivers were interlinked, the Himalayan rivers too could be linked and connected with the south through the Mahanadi and the Godavari, he said. Noting that pressure was building up from all sides for launching the project, Mr. Rajnikant said there was need to seize this moment. The BJP president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, too was planning to take a delegation to meet the Prime Minister on the issue, he pointed out.

In 2004, Mr. Rajnikanth pledged his vote for the BJP-AIADMK alliance. Though Mr. Rajnikanth was not known to have changed his opinion of Ms. Jayalalithaa, he said the support for the BJP-led NDA alliance was based on an assurance that the BJP would strive for “linking all rivers in the country to solve the drinking water crisis, at a time when other parties did not take a firm stand on the issue.''

CHENNAI, APRIL 11. Actor Rajnikant today pledged his vote for the alliance led by the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in the State, but said he would not commit his fans' support to any particular front or formation.

Addressing a press conference here, he said his decision was based on an assurance given by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) that it would strive for ``linking all rivers in the country to solve the drinking water crisis, at a time when other parties did not take a firm stand on the issue.'' Stating that the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K.Advani, also gave an assurance, Mr. Rajnikant said he was confident that the scheme would be implemented.

``I will cast my vote for the Vajpayee-led BJP front in Tamil Nadu, but I will not force my fans or the public to vote for the same combine''.

As his fans belonged to many parties, he would not ``wrest their voting right.'' Reading out an eight-page statement in two parts, Mr. Rajnikant ruled out formal support to any camp ``for various reasons''.

Though he could not predict the outcome in the State, he came to know during his recent tour of many States that the NDA, under the leadership of Mr.Vajpayee, ``is certainly going to form the Government at the Centre.''

He appealed to the people to make up their mind before going to the booth as to what should be their prime concern— success of the candidates of their party or community or the need to end the water crisis. ``Take a decision on your own. As your fate is in your hands, think well before you act.''

The first part of his statement elaborately dealt with the stand-off between the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and his fans associations right from the time the party protested against his movie, `Baba' .

Dubbing the PMK founder, S.Ramadoss, the `king of violence', Mr. Rajnikant said he hated two things in politics: corruption and violence. He opposed the PMK leader not on personal grounds but in the interests of the people of the State. Dr.Ramadoss could have conveyed his resentment to him or approached the censor board for corrective measures, instead of resorting to `brutal attacks', the actor said.

After he advised his fans to protest in a democratic manner in the six constituencies the PMK was contesting they were intimidated, Mr. Rajnikant said. To ensure their safety, he had urged them to openly support All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and BJP candidates. Condemning the attack launched against his fans in Madurai, he commended the State Government and the police for registering an `attempt to murder' case against the PMK leader. ``We will not let them off the case.'' Appealing to his fans to give up protests against Dr.Ramadoss, who sought asylum in the camp of ``my friends'', he asked them to register their opposition in a democratic manner by exercising their franchise.

``Their (PMK) success despite our protest will not mean our defeat or if they lose at the hustings, it will not mean our victory. Our intention is only to register our just protest against their unjust opposition to us,'' he said

In 2008, responding to a fan’s question on his entry into politics, Mr. Rajinikanth said, “It would be foolish to think that one is successful in politics due to sheer capability, experience and hard work. It is all a question of time and circumstances. If the time is not right, nothing can help.”

It is all a question of time and circumstances, says the actor

CHENNAI: It was a meeting that his fans were yearning for. When he made his entry around 10.05 a.m. on Monday, Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam thundered in applause and cheer with the fans screaming “Thalaivaa..!!” and “Nalaiya mudalvar.”

Actor Rajinikanth proceeded to the dais in his typically swift gait and sat on the sole black chair, smiling at his fans. As he came up to the podium, the applause grew louder, with fans getting almost hysterical at the very sight of the ‘Superstar.’

Attired in a brown-grey kurta, the actor was there to answer questions from the fans across the State. His friend V.M. Sudhakar read them out one by one.

“It would be foolish to think that one is successful in politics due to sheer capability, experience and hard work. It is all a question of time and circumstances. If the time is not right, nothing can help,” he said responding to a fan’s question on his entry into politics. “Something that is forced upon an individual will not work out. Everything is in the hands of destiny and God’s will. I will go only by that.”

“The media often accuses you of not having a stable mind. They say you are perpetually confused. I feel bad, thalaiva. Why do you give room for this,” a fan asked.

“Everything is an experience and we learn from experience. I am aware that one has to think of the repercussions of a statement before making one. Sometimes, I tend to speak my mind. I say what I believe is true, but it could possibly be read differently if seen from different perspectives. However, I have not said or done anything with selfishness.”

“There have been different reports about your response to the severe criticism on your remarks on the Hogenakkal issue. Did you actually express regret or an apology,” another fan asked.

“I wish to go forward, but you won’t let me proceed, is it?” he responded in jest, before explaining: “Be it any issue pertaining to Tamil Nadu, the first repercussion seen in Karnataka is at theatres screening Tamil films. I am also a human being and I got quite angry while I spoke at that meeting. When I said we should beat them up (udaikkanum), I should have qualified the statement as ‘beat up those who are creating trouble at theatres’. Since I didn’t, it was misread. I later expressed regret, not an apology.”

Responding to a question on Kuchelan’s failure, he explained the processes that led to decisions on distribution and added: “All this apart, if the destiny of the film was such, we cannot help it.”

On his future plans, the actor said he was currently focusing on Shankar’s ‘Enthiran’.

“It is a very good project. No such film has been made in India. I am sure that the whole nation will talk about it once it is released.”

Another question read: “I have been you fan for years together. What have you done for me?”

After a thoughtful smile and a pause, Mr. Rajinikanth said: “You see, when I entered the industry, I was keen on doing off-beat films and weighty characters alone. I studied at the film institute and came under the guidance of KB (K. Balachander) sir. In most of my initial films, all my roles were like that. Later, you wanted me to fight, I did action films. You wanted me to dance, I danced. You wanted me to try out comedy, I did that too. As an actor, haven’t I done my duty by giving good films and pleasing my fans?”

Family first :-

To questions on the actor’s plans for his fans’ associations, he said: “I will definitely let you know what I intend doing.”

The actor said he would later meet fans at exclusive meetings for fans from each district and promised to take photographs with them individually. He would organise such meetings with fans every year from now, he added. “Remember that it is always your family first. Perform your duties well and expect appropriate returns,” he said.

A section of fans who expected major announcements from their ‘thalaivar’ seemed a little disappointed that none was made.

“Anyway, we got to see him and be with him for nearly an hour. I can’t ask for more. He will tell us what to do at the right time,” said D. Rajini Selvam, a fan from Chennai.

A few others proceeded to the stage after the actor left and took photographs with the chair he sat on. “I could not take a picture with him. Let me at least take one with his chair,” said another ardent fan.

Describing the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, as a strong leader and an able administrator, actor Rajinikanth on Sunday wished him success in the future.

Talking to reporters along with Mr. Modi, who called on him at his Poes Garden residence here, Mr. Rajinikanth said there was nothing political about their meeting.

“When I was not well he called on me and every week he inquired about my health. I invited him for a meeting over a cup of tea and I am happy he has visited me,” he said.

“Everyone knows that Mr. Modi is a strong leader and an able administrator. Whatever he wants to achieve, I wish him success,” he said.

The Gujarat Chief Minister said Mr. Rajinikanth was a good friend and a well-wisher. He also greeted the people of Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Tamil New Year day.

Following AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa’s conviction in the disproportionate assets case and her return to Chennai after 21 days of jail, Mr. Rajinikanth said he was “very glad” to see her, a neighbour, back home in Poes Garden.

A very personal and touching greetings by actor Rajinikanth and Union Minister Maneka Gandhi to AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Sunday have given a jolt to Tamil Nadu BJP.

In his letter, Mr. Rajinikanth, who is being wooed by the State BJP for several months now, said he was “very glad” to see her, a neighbour, back home in Poes Garden.

Addressing her as “Respected Jayalalithaaji,” he said he was praying for good times for her. “Always wishing you well for good health and peace,” he signed off with a ‘happy Deepavali’ greeting.

AIADMK leaders view it as a gracious, humane gesture and point out that the sympathy to her extended outside the cadre base, including those in high places.

With the BJP trying hard to rope him in to provide an iconic face to it, he could have extended his greetings to her in an effort to ward off any possible hindrance to the release of his movie Lingaa slated for a December release.

Incidentally, Mr. Rajinikanth’s wishes come the day the Narendra Modi-led BJP is all set to form governments in Maharashtra and Haryana. “Mr. Rajinikanth is always keen to protect the business interests of his films and never gets caught in political quagmire ahead of the release of any of his films,” say industry sources.

The letter immediately widened the existing differences between sections of the BJP on whether Mr. Rajinikanth was indeed a good political bet. A senior State leader said his letter was a signal to the party that he may not be willing to jump into the political fray anytime soon. “While we have extended the invitation to him, given the rapport he shared with our national leaders, we always had doubts about him accepting it. The letter makes it clear to us that we cannot be depending on his entry into the BJP to improve our fortunes in Tamil Nadu,” said a State general secretary.

BJP State president Tamilisai Soundararajan observed that Mr. Rajinikanth’s letter only showcased his warm personality. “We will always welcome him into the BJP. This letter won’t change that feeling,” she said.

Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi said in her letter she was deeply sorry that this (the imprisonment) had happened. Extending her support and sympathy, Ms. Gandhi said if there was anything she could do to make the time less onerous she would be happy to do so.

Recalling how Ms. Jayalalithaa had managed through discipline and courage to overcome the odds against her in the past, Ms. Gandhi said, “We will see you formally back at the helm of administration again.”

“Take care of your health and remember that you have many admirers across the country,” Ms. Gandhi signed off with affection.

It is Ms. Gandhi’s letter that has jolted the BJP more.

“The letters will not in any manner affect the party’s efforts at strengthening the organisation. We will continue to play the role of a serious alternative force,” Ms. Tamilisai asserted.

Senior BJP leader said the party felt the situation as ideal for roping in someone like Rajinikanth, who had mass appeal.

Sensing a political opportunity in Tamil Nadu following the conviction of AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its efforts to make superstar Rajinikanth join the party.

During a Navarathri visit to Mr. Rajinikanth’s residence last week, Tamilisai Soundararajan, president of the BJP State unit, tossed the idea of the popular actor supporting the party to his wife, Lata Rajinikanth, party sources said.

BJP sources told The Hindu that Ms. Soundararajan went to the actor’s house on an invitation from Ms. Rajinikanth.

The actor was, however, away shooting for his next movie, Linga.

Ms. Soundararajan invited Mr. Rajinikanth to release a book on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently being given the final touches. She told the family that she would visit again to talk about the book when Mr. Rajinikanth returned. They discussed the political situation.
